Volunteering in the Community Drop-In Counselling Program
Volunteers in the Community Drop-In Counselling Program (CDCP) provide in-person counselling to people ages 13 and older on a wide variety of issues. Clients are typically seen for a one-time Drop-In session; however there are opportunities for experienced volunteers to offer short-term counselling as well.
Due to the nature of this opportunity, the CDCP volunteer position is for people with previous counselling experience. A minimum of two-years supervised counselling experience is required in a related social services field. We will consider employment history, post secondary field practicums, group facilitation, and volunteer experience (including Klinic phone line services). CDCP volunteers must also attend our 6-week Drop-In Volunteer Training.
Once Drop-In volunteers complete their training, they are asked to fulfill a 12-month commitment consisting of one 4-hour shift per week for their first 3 months, and then one 4-hour shift per month after your initial 3 months. Shifts in this program are available on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from noon-4pm and 3pm-7pm, and on Fridays and Saturdays from noon-4pm.
While volunteers counsel independently, they consult and debrief as part of a team.
How to get involved with the Community Drop-In Counselling Program
To build on the skills that you are already bringing to this role, each volunteer in this program must attend our 36-hour, 6-week training program before starting their volunteer commitment. Topics explored include risk assessment, crisis theory, single session approaches, suicide awareness, family violence, and mental health. If you are looking to expand your clinical experience, this is the place for you!
If you have questions regarding your eligibility for this opportunity, please contact the Program Coordinator at (204) 784-4216.
Due to the limited number of volunteer opportunities in this program, volunteer training is offered on a very limited basis, and no future training dates are currently scheduled.
