Hummingbird
The Hummingbird program helps people who have been impacted by sexual assault or intimate partner violence. Volunteers in Hummingbird are referred to as Advocates to reflect the additional training and specialized support that they provide both onsite and off.
Requirements
- Must be 18+ years old.
- have completed Klinic’s Crisis Volunteer Training and volunteered on the Crisis Lines for a minimum of 3 months.
- Attend an additional 42 hours of specialized training (12 sessions/3.5 hours per session).
- Make a 6 month commitment to volunteer: 1 shift per week (4 hours) in the Crisis Room and 2 On-call shifts per month.
- Attend group supervision (1.5 hours every second month) for support and learning.
- Open to learning, self-reflection, and providing trauma-informed support.
- Able to remain composed, work independently, and offer support in-person.
Quick Role Highlights.
- Meet with clients in-person.
- Offer information regarding legal, medical and counselling options.
- Accompany clients to meetings/appointments to provide support and help facilitate communication. This could occur at Klinic, Health Sciences Centre, police settings, court or community agencies.
Training
Before joining Hummingbird, volunteers:
- Will have completed Crisis Volunteer Training and volunteered on the Crisis Lines for a minimum of 3 months.
- Attended an additional 42 hours of specialized training (12 sessions/3.5 hours per session.)
Topics include:
- Medical and legal advocacy.
- Trauma-informed care.
- Supporting survivors with compassion.
- Role-playing and real-life scenarios.
- Working with hospitals, police, and support people.
Hummingbird Advocates also attend a group supervision session every two months to stay supported.
