One Year of Hummingbird

January 16, 2025
It’s always bittersweet to celebrate the anniversary of Klinic programs: our programs are a symptom of a problem that exists. Even so, we’re proud to address those problems with supports that work for the community because they’re designed with the community. Today, we’re recognizing one year of the important work we do to support people who have experienced sexual assault or intimate partner violence through our Hummingbird program, contributing to the years-long history of community-based response for survivors at Klinic. One year in, here’s how Hummingbird is doing: In 2024, sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE) at Klinic supported 347 new clients, providing medical assessment after SA/IPV, collecting forensic evidence, and connecting them to resources like counselling and other community supports. Hummingbird advocates made 137 visits to support clients while they’re at the hospital, making police statements, or appearing in court. This year, advocates also helped clients file 19 third party reports, the most since third party reports became available in 2018. These efforts are not possible without the guidance and love that the Ogijiita Peer Council shares with the Hummingbird Team. Consisting of 11 members with lived experience and expertise on SA/IPV, Ogijiita was established in 2024 to ensure that Hummingbird grows and responds to what the community needs most. We’re proud to stand with survivors–warriors–as Hummingbird for the last year, addressing the unique needs of each of our clients and providing everyone with the support they want during their healing journey.
