West Broadway Community Organization buys former home of Klinic Community Health WINNIPEG, MANITOBA – DECEMBER 19, 2017: West Broadway Community Organization (WBCO) is proud to announce that our offices are relocating to 545 Broadway as of January 2018. This former home of Klinic Community Health is an important heritage building that has played a definitive role in the character and consciousness of this community for over a century. Built in 1904 and known historically as Wilson House, this building was Klinic’s home from 1977-1990. It was vacant through the 1990s and became a rallying point for local residents who united to paint murals on its boarded windows and cut grass grown long by an owner committed to demolition. This modest act of protest and neighbourhood pride was a galvanizing moment for West Broadway, residents and other stakeholders empowered by this success began to organize and by 1997 the West Broadway Community Organization was founded. “To buy this property on behalf of West Broadway, in what is our 20th anniversary as an organization, is a symbolic return to our roots, and an example of what is possible when a community of people work together,” says Greg MacPherson, Executive Director of WBCO. “Klinic Community Health continues to be an invaluable partner and resource for West Broadway and we are grateful to inherit a building that has been modernized and maintained in impeccable condition for the past 13 years.” Klinic’s head office is currently located at 870 Portage but Klinic is returning to its West Broadway roots with the purchase of 167 Sherbrook and anticipated move date of July 2019. “West Broadway Community Organization and the important work they do is a great fit for this building, which some folks see as a cornerstone in the neighbourhood”, says Nicole Chammartin, Executive Director of Klinic. “We’re excited to be moving back to West Broadway- a neighbourhood in which we have deep ties, and look forward to offering services to all of our clients in our new larger space, with room to grow. We are also happy to continue to partner and work with WBCO in their new home.”
