Medical care and physical exams

Specially trained nurses known as Forensic Nurse Examiners provide medical services which may include the assessment, prevention, treatment, and management of:

  • Physical injuries.
  • Sexually transmitted infections.
  • Pregnancy.

Collection of evidence

It is always your choice if you want to report an assault to police. During your appointment, the nurse will explain options for collecting physical evidence in case you choose to involve police. This is best done as soon as possible, but can be done up to 10 days following a SA. You can choose to involve the police at any point.

Support and advocacy

Advocates are available to support people who have experienced SA and/or IPV. Advocates can support and attend any related medical exams at any medical facility within Winnipeg. They can also attend legal appointments such as police statements, and court processes, and can provide additional resources or reporting options.

Systems navigation and cultural care

System navigation staff can accompany you to your appointments, and connect you to resources and support at Klinic and in the community. These supports can include housing, income assistance, CFS advocacy, and cultural supports such as smudge, drumming, and pipe ceremony.

Counselling services

Counselling services are available at no cost and include drop-in and one-on-one counselling, group sessions, activities through the Life in Balance Program (yoga groups, acupuncture, meditation, workshops), and more.

Legal supports

Involving the police

It is your decision if you want to speak to the police. You can report a sexual assault or intimate partner violence at any time with or without evidence.

Third-party reports (TPR)

Third-party reports are a way of reporting an SA and/or IPV anonymously and do not involve a police investigation or court process. Individuals who complete a TPR are eligible to apply for support under the Compensation for Victims of Crime Program.
