Medical care and physical exams

It is important to consider getting medical care following an assault, even if you don’t think you are injured. Nurses, known as Forensic Nurse Examiners, are specially trained to:

  • Check you for injuries.
  • Provide medication for unwanted or unplanned pregnancy (must be taken within 5 days).
  • Give medication to help prevent HIV (must be taken within 3 days).
  • Test and treat STBBIs.
  • Collect forensic evidence and document injuries in case you want to involve police (now or in the future). This evidence can be collected within 10 days of the assault but sooner is better. You do not need to decide about involving police at the time of your appointment.
  • It is your choice if you would like to see one of our nurses at Klinic on Sherbrook St. or at Ka Ni Kanichihk.

Support and advocacy

Advocates are available to support people who have experienced sexual assault and/or intimate partner violence. Advocates can share information about the options for reporting an assault. They can support and attend any related medical exams at any medical facility within Winnipeg. They can also attend legal appointments such as police statements, and court processes, and can provide additional resources or reporting options.

Systems navigation and cultural care

System navigation staff can accompany you to your appointments, and connect you to resources and support at Klinic and in the community. These supports can include housing, income assistance, CFS involvement, counselling, wellness activities, and cultural supports such as smudge, drumming, and pipe ceremony.

Counselling services

Counselling services are available at no cost and include drop-in and one-on-one counselling, group sessions and more:

24/7 Sexual Assault Crisis Line: 204-786-8631 or 1-888-292-7565 (free from anywhere)

Drop-in Counselling: one time session

One on one counselling for sexual assault: 431-478-1641.

Evolve: one on one counselling for intimate partner violence (domestic abuse/violence)

Collection of evidence

It is always your choice if you want to report an assault to police. During your appointment, the nurse will explain options for collecting physical evidence in case you choose to involve police. This is best done as soon as possible, but can be done up to 10 days following a SA. You can choose to involve the police at any point.

Legal supports

Involving the police

It is your decision if you want to speak to the police. You can report a sexual assault or intimate partner violence at any time with or without evidence. Klinic Advocates can assist you with this.

Third-party reports (TPR)

Third-party reports (TPR) are a way of reporting a sexual assault and/or intimate partner violence anonymously and do not involve a police investigation or court process. Klinic advocates can assist you with this. Individuals who complete a TPR are eligible to apply for support under the Compensation for Victims of Crime Program.
