Crisis Program Volunteer Application form

Klinic works in a way that recognizes the value of caring for the minds, bodies, and hearts of both our service users and service providers. Our work is grounded in our feminist, pro-choice, anti-oppressive values; and we welcome people of all sexual orientations and gender identities, all cultural backgrounds, and all abilities to become a part of our volunteer team. Volunteers are a vital part of our agency and we value the full range of experience that volunteers bring to this work.

Every applicant must attend our Crisis Volunteer Training before beginning in their role as a volunteer. This training takes place for 3.5 hours, twice a week, for 14 weeks. Applicants who miss more than 2 sessions (or both parts of a two-part session) will have their participation in our program reviewed. Attending all training sessions is important as you will be learning information as well as practicing skills; both the content and process of the training will be integral parts of your learning. Accommodations can be made as required, however, trainees are expected to be assertive in communicating their needs and responding to unplanned situations.

Volunteer counsellors work with people who are currently in crisis and seeking help, which demands a high level of kindness and responsibility. Before applicants complete their training and begin their crisis counseling work, they must demonstrate the ability to work within Klinic’s value system and counselling model, as well as an appropriate level of skill in their counselling ability. Applicants also need to be at least 18 years old. Every volunteers must provide a Criminal Record Check obtained within the past six months, and be willing to apply for a Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check before attending Crisis Training.

All Crisis Volunteer applicants need to complete our full 86 hour of classroom Crisis Volunteer Training and 48 hours of Crisis Room training. We offer this training free of charge, and ask for 200 hours volunteer work in exchange for this learning and experience. Volunteer hours completed during the second part of your training, in the Crisis Room, contribute towards the requested commitment. Volunteers need to be able to attend the same shift each week, and accrue vacation time that they can use once they complete their Crisis Room training.
