FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — On November 3rd and 4th, the Manitoba Trauma Collaborative, in collaboration with the Province of Manitoba, will host a provincial forum to explore how service organizations and systems can support trauma-informed service delivery, Director of Counselling Services at Klinic Community Health Centre Tim Wall announced today.
“Traumatic events can have profound and long lasting effects on physical, mental, relational and spiritual health,” said Healthy Living and Seniors Minister Sharon Blady. “Our government is committed to continuing to work with partners to better understand psychological trauma and trauma-informed care and see how we can continue to make a difference.”
Since hosting the very first forum on trauma in 2007, Manitoba has been a national leader in promoting trauma-informed approaches to service delivery, design and care. Approximately 300 clinicians and policy makers from all over Manitoba will gather at the Delta Hotel for this forum to explore strategies for moving trauma-informed practices and policies forward across all systems in Manitoba.
“Trauma is an almost universal experience. It is something we all share, and traumatic events are something few of us can prevent from happening,” said Mr. Wall. “The impact of trauma is far reaching and is often at the root of many of the social and public health problems that challenge our society. Working together we can develop tools and resources that reduce the impact of trauma.”
Mr. Wall noted that every service provider and service organization regardless of role or mandate can make a real difference, support recovery and nurture resilience.
“Trauma-informed approaches can revolutionize the way we provide services, creating services that are sensitive to the needs of people affected by trauma and that make important contributions to the quality of life of every Manitoban,” said Cheryl Matthews, Coordinator for the Manitoba Trauma Information and Education Centre at Klinic.
This forum builds on several other trauma related initiatives, many of which were the result of collaborative support from Klinic, the
Government of Manitoba and other community partners.
These initiatives include:
- the production of a Trauma-Informed: The Trauma Toolkit, a resource for service organizations and providers to deliver traumainformed services;
- training workshops on trauma-informed care for service organizations, training workshops on trauma-informed counselling for clinicians;
- trauma-informed training for foster parents and child welfare service providers; and,
- the establishment of the Manitoba Trauma Information and Education Centre.
